Memoirs of the Queensland Museum

The museum’s peer-reviewed journal, Memoirs of the Queensland Museum, celebrated 100 years of scientific publishing in November 2012.  With about 40,000 pages and 1,800 contributing authors, the Memoirs has published over 2,100 peer-reviewed articles and Notes, including the descriptions of approximately 5,500 new species, and has documented the evidence of adaptation and resilience of Queensland's natural and cultural communities in the face of rapid environmental and technological changes.

In 1998 the Memoirs was split into two series - Nature and Culture - with the latter dedicated to Queensland's Cultural Heritage. The Cultural series was awarded a Silver medal in the Governor's Heritage Award for Volume 5, entitled ‘Behind the Tin Fence: A history of the Ipswich Railway Workshops’

In 2014 the Memoirs Nature published first online with Volume 59.
Memoirs - Culture are print volumes with back issues available online. Institutions wishing to have their work published through the Queensland Museum will be required to contribute to the costs of publication.

Both series are recognised as Excellence for Research in Australia (ERA) Journals that are scholarly, peer-reviewed and registered with ISSNs.

  • Memoirs of the Queensland Museum | NATURE   [ISSN 0079-8835 (print), ISSN 2204-1478 (online), ERA Journal ID 2098]  Volume 63 is available from this website as individual documents.

The Memoirs of the Queensland Museum shares new knowledge from research on the material evidence, traditions and history of the natural, ancient and cultural environments of Queensland and adjacent land and seas, with all communities. All manuscripts published are peer reviewed by experts in their field.

Our publications are sent on exchange or by subscription across the world - and now also available online soon after printing - with earlier issues available either here (see the list of available volumes at the left side of this webpage), or from the Biodiversity Heritage Library (Volumes 47 and earlier).

Technical Reports of the Queensland Museum (ISSN 1837-6568) are available only online in a ‘read only’ format. These Reports may include reproductions (or revisions) of documents that were originally compiled to advise industry, government or academia on specific scientific issues. They are published to ensure that the scientific and technical data they contain are not lost within the vast unpublished scientific ’grey literature’.
